Strengthening Arizona's Biomedical Engineering Research Workforce
Are you an incoming student in the College of Engineering at the University of Arizona in Fall 2025 with an interest in biomedical engineering?
Strengthening Arizona’s Biomedical Engineering Research Workforce (SABER) program is aimed at cultivating research talent in biomedical engineering (BME) by providing continuous research experience throughout the undergraduate college career. The program offers (a) mentored research experience in biomedical engineering, starting your first year in the College of Engineering and (b) professional development and hands-on workshops to develop research and technical skills.
Be admitted to the University of Arizona College of Engineering
Be a new undergraduate (i.e., first year) student in biomedical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Interest in biomedical/health-related research.
Interest in pursuing graduate studies
Available to participate in full-time training and research (25 hours per week) during summer and part-time training and research (~10 hours per week) during the academic year (i.e., Fall and Spring)
The SABER program runs from the Fall semester of the freshman year in engineering through the Spring or Summer of the sophomore year.
Scholars will then transition into a Honors program at the beginning of the junior year (or earlier) to continue their research experience.
Scholars will receive a salary of up to $3,900 per semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer) paid as hourly wages from the Fall semester during the freshman year to Spring/Summer of the sophomore year.
Scholars will be eligible to work for a total of 260 hours in any given semester (for example, 10 to 20 hours during Fall and Spring semesters and an average of 25 hours during Summer). This compensation is subject to active participation in research and training activities.
How many scholars will be accepted into this program?
We will accept up to 7 scholars every year. Additional spots may be added depending on availability of resources and approval from sponsor (National Institutes of Health).
What do I need for the application process?
Before starting the application, please have the following items and responses ready. Once you have these responses ready, the application will take less than 5 minutes to complete.
What are you career goals? (100 words or one paragraph)
A description of your prior professional experiences, including any skills and perspectives you developed in those experiences (200 words or two paragraphs). Experiences may include community service, work or research experiences, academic projects, participation in workshops etc.
A PDF of your current resume/CV (no page limit).
Where will the research and training take place?
All research and training activities will take place at the University of Arizona. Scholars will work closely with faculty mentors in biomedical engineerng and closely related areas.
How will scholars be matched with faculty mentors?
Scholars will be matched with faculty mentors based on their research interests, academic background, and career goals. Scholars and potential mentors will have the chance to meet and interview each other to explore shared interests in biomedical engineering.
